Zibby Gets Set for Offseason TrainingBy Kristopher FieckeFebruary 18, 2010In a league where players are consistently getting bigger, stronger and faster, every player is looking for an edge to give themselves a competitive advantage. The formula is simple: Find out how you can gain speed and power and youll have a leg up on your competition. As a defensive back and special teamer, Tom Zbikowskis speed is the key to on-field success. Kick and punt returners are lightning-quick. Figuring out the best angles to make the tackle is half the battle. You also have to have the necessary speed once you take that angle or the return man will blow by you in the blink of an eye. The same can be said when youre playing safety. If a speedy running back (like Tennessees Chris Johnson, for example) is able to get through your defenses front seven, you need to be fast enough to cut him off or hell be gone for a touchdown. The cardinal rule of playing safety is never, ever let anyone get behind you. A safetys speed is a key in reaching this objective. As the NFL evolves with faster receivers, its crucial for a safety to have the necessary quickness. If a wide receiver gets a head of steam at the line and beats the cornerback, you need the quickness to head him off at the pass or youll be burned for six. Speed has always been a big part of Tom Zbikowskis game. After a Fiesta Bowl loss in 2006, Zibby knew that he needed to add more quickness in the game. In the Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State had too much speed for Zbikowski and the Notre Dame defense to handle. Speedy Buckeyes Ted Ginn Jr. and Antonio Pittman were simply too quick for the Irish defense. That offseason, Tom enlisted the help of the enemy and sought the help of former Buckeye great, Cris Carter. After Notre Dames spring practices, Zibby enrolled in Cris Carters FAST program in Florida. Carter helped Zbikowski get faster and learn a little more about whats going on in the minds of opposing wide receivers. Now Zbikowski is taking what hes learned though his experiences and sharing his knowledge with others. Zibbys always been a bit unorthodox when it coming to training. Not every football player has the chops to make it as a professional boxer. Now Tommy is taking what hes learned about gaining speed and sharing it with the public. Zbikowski has partnered with Sports Performance Coach John Alder to start Tommy Zs Purespeed Clinic. John has over 20 years of experience in athlete enhancement and has trained more than 25 athletes, preparing them for success in professional careers. The program takes place at the World Gym in Palatine, IL, near Toms hometown. The PureSpeed program puts athletes through a series of treadmill workouts, focusing on the mechanics of what it takes to build more speed. A series of 12 60-90 minute workout sessions are intended to push the athlete and give them the knowledge and skill to increase their overall speed.
